Description
Dover is one of those towns that people drive through, but probably don’t visit long. It’s the nearest port to France, for the trek across the English Channel towards Calais.
Buses and cars wait in line on the road as they approach the harbor. Tourists exit their bus for Customs, then reboard for a short maneuver to the terminal. Then you wait insde until a ferry is ready to board. Once you do board, you wonder around and check out the HUGE ferry while trucks and cars are being loaded below. Then you start your half hour voyage across the channel.
Whatever you do, go up top for a great view of the Dover cliffs and harbor as you pull away. Most ferries exit the Eastern Dock, closest to the cliffs. The Western Dock exit would have been nice too, as there are white lighthouses on both sides to see.
